Homeowner RRAP (Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program)

The Homeowner RRAP offers financial assistance to households in Core Housing Need who own and occupy substandard housing to enable them to repair their dwellings to a minimum level of health and safety.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Homeowners may apply:

* if the value of their house is below a specific figure; and
* if their household income is below established ceilings, based on household size and area (Core Need Income Thresholds - CNIT).

Eligibility is limited to properties lacking basic facilities or in need of major repair in one or more of five categories:

* structural;
* electrical;
* plumbing;
* heating;
* fire safety.

Assistance may also be available to alleviate overcrowding.

Eligible Repairs:

The forgivable assistance is available only for manditory repairs relating to health and safety and to extending the useful life of the property. Repayable assistance is available for other eligible repairs, such as installing insulation.

Ineligible Repairs:

Work carried out before the Homeowner RRAP loan is approved in writing is not eligible.
 

Description

This program helps fund repairs and modifications that help preserve Canada's stock of affordable housing.
 

Forgivable Assistance

* Varies according to household income and the cost of manditory repairs.
* Maximum forgiveness is available where the household income is 60 percent or less of the CNIT for the area.
* Forgivable amounts decline to 0 percent for households with incomes at CNIT.
* Forgiveness available is based on a percentage of the repair cost.
